Web to Markdown browser extension — last updated June 3, 2026
Short version: Web to Markdown processes everything locally in your browser. It does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any of your data. There are no accounts, no servers, and no analytics.
What the extension does
When you click “Convert”, the extension reads the content of the page you are currently viewing and turns it into Markdown text directly on your device. The result is shown in the side panel and can be copied, downloaded, or sent to an app you choose.
Data we collect
None. We do not operate any backend service for this extension. Page content, conversion results, your settings, and your conversion history never leave your browser. History and settings are stored only in your browser's local extension storage and can be cleared at any time from the History and Settings pages.
Permissions and why they are needed
- activeTab / host access — to read the content of the page you ask to convert, and (only for the “download images as zip” and “inline images” modes, and only after you opt in) to fetch the images referenced by that page so they can be bundled or embedded.
- tabs — to show the title/URL of the active tab and to list the tabs in the current window for batch conversion.
- downloads — to save the generated .md or .zip file.
- storage — to remember your settings and local history.
- sidePanel / clipboardWrite — to show the UI and to copy the Markdown to your clipboard when you ask.
Third-party sites
The “Send to AI” buttons simply copy the Markdown to your clipboard and open the chat website you picked (for example ChatGPT or Claude) in a new tab. We do not send anything to those sites on your behalf — you paste it yourself. Those sites have their own privacy policies.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated date above will change and the new version will ship with the extension update.
